This is Greg Thomas. Welcome to the Welsh-American Channel. In 1897 my grandfather, Thomas John Thomas emigrated to the United States leaving his village of Treorchy, in South Wales. He left his family at the young age of 22, leaving on a ship from Liverpool, England, and he arrived in New York. Later he settled in Ohio. He was one of the millions of Welsh immigrants who have arrived in the Americas since the 17th century, when Welsh settlers first arrived in North America.

That is unless you want to include the legend of Madoc ab Owain Gwynedd who was, according to folklore, a Welsh prince who sailed to America in 1170, over three hundred years before Christopher Columbus's voyage in 1492. This channel will celebrate the rich and significant contribution of Welsh-Americans from Prince of Wales Island… to Patagonia and everywhere in-between.

We will look at American founders, patriots, pirates, business leaders, preachers, politicians and the gentle folk who left a significant legacy in the America’s.

So join me as we examine the wonderful history, culture and significant impact left by the Welsh emigrants who settled in North and South America. Learn why their descendants are proud to be Welsh-Americans!
