Описание к видео Daivd Lynch Fox Bat Strategy Behind The Music

Steve Hodges recounts the history and making of the David Lynch-produced 'Fox Bat Strategy: A Tribute to Dave Jaurequi.' Recorded in 1994 and ultimately released in 2009, the album features a cast of musicians who began collectively collaborating with Lynch surrounding the production of 'Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me.' Drummer Stephen Hodges narrates, along with anecdotes from Lynch himself.

Fox Bat Strategy: A Tribute to Dave Jaurequi isn't a typical tribute album, where other performers cover the artist's work, usually after he or she is dead. Instead, this concise set of pretty, lonely songs was recorded in 1994, two years before Jaurequi passed away at age 50. David Lynch brought the guitarist together with the band that recorded the Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me soundtrack and had Jaurequi sing the director's deceptively simple lyrics. Like the Fire Walk with Me music, Fox Bat Strategy is rooted in the '50s, half teen idol romance ("Almost an Angel") and half beatnik cool ("Rollin' Down with You"). Unlike any of the Twin Peaks music, however, these songs feel loose and lively, and arguably more like a true collaboration than the soundtracks did. Jaurequi's voice is haunting, and not just because this album was released posthumously: like an actor in a Lynch film, his whispery vocals range from boyish innocence to jaded spoken word, often within the same song, as the music follows suit. "Shoot the Works" is full of quintessentially Lynchian mood shifts, switching from romantic to menacing and back with dreamlike swiftness. "Lost on Cahuenga" is another standout, moving from blankly innocent verses that could fit in a lost Roy Orbison song to something stranger and darker in a chiaroscuro back and forth of pretty little girls and Santa Ana winds. Album opener "They Go Down" feels ahead of its time, its surreal Southwestern twang and industrial-tinged textures suggesting Calexico's more experimental moments. And while Jaurequi's voice is surprisingly good, he really sings with his fretwork on "You're the One"'s solos. Some of Fox Bat Strategy's tracks feel a bit long, but as a whole the album is all too brief -- a tantalizing glimpse of Jaurequi's artistry and Lynch's always interesting musical forays.
