Five years after the Stanley White Recreation Center was destroyed during hurricane Florence, the City hosted a groundbreaking ceremony celebrating the start of construction on a new one. The new center will be a state-of-the-art facility with nearly double the square footage of the old one, which opened in 1976. It'll feature a double gymnasium, elevated track, cardio, weight and fitness rooms, meeting space, a health screening room, game room, and kitchen. The building will also serve as an emergency shelter. The new Stanley A. White Recreation Center will be operated by the City's Parks & Recreation department which will oversee program offerings such as athletics, classes, summer camps, special events, reservations and rentals, etc. Many thanks to the Board of Aldermen (past and present) for their leadership and hard work towards rebuilding this community asset. The new facility will be built along Third Avenue, approximately one-tenth of a mile from where the old one was and will now be out of the floodplain. It will take approximately 15 months to complete construction.
