In Chile, there are some indigenous named places that can be a mouthful and Antofagasta Chile is certainly one of those. Took me a while to be able to remember and mouth Antofagasta but I came here to split up my travel between Iquique, just north of Antofagasta Chile, and La Serena about 8 hours south of Antofagasta.

In all honestly, did not hear many good things about Antofagasta, or at least most people said they had completely bypassed it on their way up and down the coast of Chile. Also, with San Pedro de Atacama not too far away from Antofagasta, most people see Antofagasta as expendable and do not visit. I would say, they are missing out.

Antofagasta was a big surprise and a beautiful city. Similar to much of northern Chile, Antofagasta is very brown, very dry, but very bright. The sun seems to shine all the time in the north of Chile no matter the season and Antofagasta, with the coast right there is definitely a peaceful city.

Through the center of Antofagasta Chile there is a nice promenade that goes through the whole town lined with cafes, restaurants and shops but the best thing to do in Antofagasta Chile is to visit La Portada. The La Portada, or the cover, in English, is a rock formation just 30 minutes north of Antofagasta and is one of the coolest natural occurences in the state and north of Chile. The coast is rugged and beautiful, and the La Portada formation sits just off the coast for gorgeous photos and video.
