According to now-redacted planning applications, Prince William and Catherine were granted permission to renovate the interior and exterior of their new home, Forest Lodge.

However, unlike most royal renovations, it’s been reported that the Prince and Princess of Wales have chosen to pay for the alteration costs and the ‘rent’ themselves, meaning there would be no extra cost to the taxpayer.

Although the property is owned by King Charles through the Crown Estate, William and Catherine still have to pay market rent to stay in the home.

The Wales' decision comes after it was reported that £800,000 of taxpayer money had been spent on fixing the Grand Staircase at Buckingham Palace in 2022.
