A playthrough of Jaleco's 1993 beat 'em up for the Super Nintendo, Brawl Brothers.

Played on the normal difficulty level.

Brawl Brothers, known in Japan as Rushing Beat Ran, is the second game in Jaleco's series of SNES-exclusive beat 'em ups, and it is the sequel to the game released in the west as Rival Turf! (   • Rival Turf! (SNES) Playthrough  ). Like its precursor, it's a brazen rehash of the gameplay seen in Streets of Rage and Final Fight, but it represents a fair leap in graphics and playability over the first game.

Three new combatants, including a ninja clad in neon green (Kazan), a hulking martial artist (Lord J), and a female wrestler (Wendy), join Jack (Hack) and Oozie (Slash) for this new fight. The action is mostly made up of walking right and punching, but there was an attempt to inject some variety by adding in a few maze-style stages, by posing playable characters as bosses to be recruited, and by bringing back Rival Turf!'s novel "angry mode." Given how difficult the game can be, I'd recommend playing with the angry mode option enabled.

Unfortunately, like most of Jaleco's SNES titles, Brawl Brothers suffers from a poor localization job. What little story the game once had was stripped out, the character-specific ending scenes were cut, and the mazes were an annoying and unnecessary addition. And why can you no longer kick someone in the nuts and watch them hobble away in pain? At least the original Japanese version can still be accessed with a secret code.

As much of a hack job as it is (no pun intended), Brawl Brothers is still an entertaining distraction for the short time it lasts. It was good rental fodder.
