Kevin Costner to Receive 2025 Motion Picture Sound Editors’ Filmmaker Award
The Motion Picture Sound Editors’ (MPSE) Filmmaker Award will go to Oscar-winning actor and director Kevin Costner, and the organization’s Career Achievement Award will go to supervising sound editor Greg Hedgepath.
Both honors will be given out on February 23 at the Ebell Theater in Los Angeles during MPSE's 72nd Annual Golden Reel Awards Gala.
Every year, filmmakers of distinction receive the MPSE Filmmaker Award. "It is given to a person whose career has shown a great appreciation and understanding of the impact of sound editing," the organization states. A person whose career has significantly impacted the sound community via exceptional work, service, or leadership is given the MPSE Career Achievement Award.
"Throughout his illustrious career, Kevin Costner has captivated audiences with his powerful storytelling," says David Barber, president of MPSE. His use of sound as a key element of his cinematic narrative has evoked strong feelings in us and drawn us into the worlds he has built for decades, from epic Westerns to moving tragedies. His most recent major endeavor, the Horizon saga, makes this love of sound very evident. We are ecstatic to present him with the Filmmaker Award in appreciation of his outstanding contributions to the craft of sound storytelling in television and movies.
Costner has been in Hollywood for a long time. After making his debut in the ensemble drama The Big Chill, he went on to amass a remarkable filmography of roles. JFK, Silverado, No Way Out, Bull Durham, Field of Dreams, The Bodyguard, and Wyatt Earp are just a few of the movies in his repertoire. In the 2013 film Man of Steel, he also portrayed Superman's father, Jonathan Kent. Naturally, Costner most recently starred in Yellowstone, a television series starring Taylor Sheridan, from which he left in the fifth season.
He began directing with the 1990 movie Dances with Wolves. He went on to helm the critically acclaimed and commercially successful 2003 feature Open Range. At the moment, Costner is working hard on the Horizon: An American Saga film series, which he directs, co-writes, produces, and stars in. When he's not filming, Costner performs live all across the nation as the lead guitarist and vocalist for his band, Modern West. Tales from Yellowstone, their most recent CD, came out in 2020.
