Billy Joel was born in 1949 in the South Bronx , New York . He grew up in a Jewish family in Hicksville on Long Island , New York . The father was born in Germany and the mother in England, both of Jewish parents.
Joel made his debut as a fifteen-year-old in 1964 in the group The Echoes , which specialized in playing British cover songs. In 1967 he joined the group The Hassles which released two albums and four singles 1967 - 1969 . After that, Joel formed the duo Attila with Jon Small who had played drums in The Hassles . The duo played psychedelic hard rock and Joel played organ.
He got his first hit single in 1974 with " Piano Man ", and had his heyday during the late 1970s and early 1980s with hits such as " Just the Way You Are ", " Tell Her About It " and " Uptown Girl ". His album has changed in style over the years from jazz-inspired rock on the 52nd Street album to straight rock on the Glass House album and nostalgic flashbacks on the album An Innocent Man . After several years of absence from the lists, Joel returned in 1993 with the song The River of Dreams .
Joel has also lent his voice to the dog Dodger in the animated movie Oliver & gang from 1988 .
Billy Joel was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1999 . He was married to Christie Brinkley between 1985 and 1994 and has a daughter with her.
