Former diplomat and author Vikas Swarup, whose novel ‘Q&A’ was adapted into multiple Academy Award-winning film, ‘Slumdog Millionaire,’ is back with a ‘social thriller’ after 11 years. ‘The Girl With The Seven Lives,’ published by Simon & Schuster India, tells the story of Debi, a young woman born in a slum, who is kidnapped and held hostage by a gunman. The novel unfolds over a single night, where Debi must recount her life’s story to stay alive. In an interview to ‘The Federal’, Swarup says it’s a snapshot of modern India, with a touch of feminism. He also sees this as a novel about urbanisation that details how private developers are building urban India and how the latter is ‘colonising’ rural India. “It’s a story of resilience, reinvention, and redemption,” he says.
