It: Welcome to Derry Explained – Pennywise’s Dark Origins takes Stephen King’s legendary horror story back in time to uncover the chilling history of Derry, Maine. The HBO Max series expands on the mythology from Andy Muschietti’s hit films, revealing how Pennywise’s curse began long before the Losers’ Club.

Season 1 is set in 1962, a full 27 years before the first movie’s timeline, following King’s cycle of Pennywise’s return. Later seasons will move even deeper into the past—1935 and 1908—mirroring the novel’s exploration of earlier tragedies tied to the clown’s cosmic evil. The series also adapts iconic moments from the book, including the destruction of the Black Spot, a key tragedy linked to Pennywise’s corrupting influence.

Fans can expect not only supernatural scares but also a heavier dive into cosmic horror. The teaser already hints at Pennywise’s arrival in Derry through a violent meteor strike—something the films only teased. With Bill Skarsgård reprising his terrifying role, alongside Jovan Adepo, Taylour Paige, Chris Chalk, and more, Welcome to Derry promises to expand King’s universe in ways the films never could.
