In a vertical blind, the clip that hangs down is called a “stem”. It is attached to a long gear (“tilt rod”) by a rectangular piece called a “carrier”.

If your clip breaks, it’s fairly straightforward to snap it out and snap in a new one.

But if the carrier breaks, it can be fairly involved to replace it. You have to disassemble the whole track.

I made this video to show how to disassemble the whole track and replace just one carrier. 

I talked to a professional window place today and they recommend replacing the whole set of carriers if you’re starting to have them break, because they’re probably getting brittle because of age.

I opted to replace only the three broken carriers & 1 broken stem in my track, because the shop quoted me over $100 and 2-3 weeks to get this repaired. But I only had a couple bucks and needed it done tonight. So they were willing to sell me a few parts, and I took a couple hours and did it. I probably could’ve done the whole thing in about 30 minutes if I weren’t videotaping it.

The biggest thing to watch out for in this project, was making sure to rotate all the stems completely clockwise before you reinsert the tilt rod (long gear rod). The first time I did it, I rotated them all completely counter-clockwise. I couldn’t open the blinds at all. So i had to take it apart again and redo it. Was much faster the second time.

Another thing to watch out for. If your parts are breaking because the plastic is brittle due to age, you might end up breaking even more of it by disassembling it. In my case, it was broken due to damage. So I wasn’t too worried.
