Assam is the most species rich state in India in terms of turtle diversity . It is home to 20 species of freshwater turtles and tortoises out of 28 species present in India. Unfortunately 70% of these species of turtles are threatened with extinction. Help Earth, for the past decade has been actively involved in turtle conservation. The present initiative of Help Earth focuses on conservation of turtles in temple ponds and carrying out captive breeding programme. Last year, in the Haygriv Madheb Temple at Hajo, we have successfully bred an extinct in wild species, the Black Softshell turtle. Fourteen hatchlings were reared for eight months and released back into the pond of Haygriv Madheb Temple. It is a matter of immense joy and pride, that this year 35 individuals of Black Softshell turtle, Indian Softshell turtle, Peacock Softshell turtle were released in Pobitora WLS on 27 January 2019. All these turtle were bred in Haygriv Madheb temple at Hajo. The hatchlings were nurtured at conservation facility of Haygriv Madheb temple after which they were translocated to Assam State Zoo, where they served a quarantine period of 39 days.
