Animated film "The Keeper of the Camphor Tree" to be released on Friday, January 30, 2026
This tree holds a secret.
Keigo Higashino's novel "The Keeper of the Camphor Tree" has sold over one million copies and garnered a huge response. While many of Higashino's works have been adapted, this is the first time it has been made into an anime. The story of the mysterious camphor tree, which is said to grant wishes if you pray to it, and the young man who becomes its guardian, is vividly brought to life on the big screen.
The film is helmed by director Tomohiko Ito, who has garnered widespread support for his work on "Sword Art Online" (2012), "Erased" (2016/CX), and "HELLO WORLD" (2019). The screenplay will be written by Taku Kishimoto, who has brilliantly adapted the original work for the "Haikyu!!" series.
The music is spun by Yugo Kanno, known for his heart-pounding melodies in Higashino's works, including "The Devotion of Suspect X" (2008), as well as numerous other dramas, films, and animations. Character design is handled by Tsubasa Yamaguchi, known for "Blue Period," and Akiko Itagaki, who earned acclaim as the animation director for "The Castle in the Mirror" (22). The characters created by these two are encased in background art by Hiroshi Takiguchi, known for his fantastical landscapes in "Your Name" (2016).
A-1 Pictures, the studio behind numerous masterpieces, brings to life the mysterious world of "The Guardian of the Camphor Tree" with sophisticated visual expression.
The film depicts the human drama that unfolds around a camphor tree that has received countless prayers and the young man who becomes its guardian. The protagonist, Reito Naoi, is played by Fumiya Takahashi, who has steadily expanded his range of expression by taking on complex characters in dramas and films. Takahashi's performance, in which he honestly confronts the pain and conflict that Reito carries and puts his heart into it, is delivered with such passion that it reaches the audience directly across the screen.
The role of Yanagisawa Chishu, Reito's aunt who is deeply connected to his fate, is voiced by Amami Yuki, who has starred in numerous masterpieces and has an overwhelming presence in animated films such as Studio Ghibli. The acting of the two actors, set against a beautifully polished visual, carefully captures the innermost feelings and turmoil of Reito and Chishu.
A talented cast has also assembled to fill the key roles that color the story.
The role of Saji Toshiaki is played by Osawa Takao, who has exuded a unique presence in numerous works and in this film provides a voice that envelops the work. Saito Asuka, who continues to make great strides in film and drama, plays Toshiaki's daughter Saji Yumi, and after auditioning, she takes on the role of voice acting in a theatrical animation film for the first time. Miyase Ryuya, who has experience dubbing overseas animation as well as films and TV dramas, was also selected through auditions to play Ooba Soki, a young man who visits the camphor tree, making his debut in a Japanese animation film.
When the final truth entrusted to the camphor tree is revealed, the warmth of an unseen emotion will shake the viewer's soul. What miracle will be woven by the united prayers of the people who gather under the camphor tree?
In 2026, Japan's most renowned creators and cast will come together to bring this long-awaited moving film to life.
