E foi pela Nikolaikirche, a primeira igreja de Berlim, que começaram as fundações da hoje, gigantesca capital da Alemanha. Na Idade Média, uma importante rota comercial passava pelo bairro. Artesãos e comerciantes fixaram ponto no cruzamento do Rio Spree, rio que corta a cidade de Berlim, com a estrada. Além da igreja, o bairro histórico tem outros locais bem interessantes, como casas e palácios que viraram museus. Uma simples caminhada pelas pequenas ruas de paralelepípedo já seria uma atração à parte. O bairro foi quase que totalmente destruído por bombardeios na Segunda Guerra Mundial. Ficou por décadas abandonado e foi reconstruído nos anos de 1980 e inaugurado em 1987. A reconstrução foi comandada pelo arquiteto alemão Günter Stahn e marcou o aniversário dos 750 anos de Berlim.
