Hurricane information for kids is perfect for children of all ages and ideal for classroom use. If you are teaching your kids more about hurricanes or trying to learn about them in school or at home then look no further. Also find the difference between tornadoes and hurricanes.

Do you know what a hurricane is? Have you ever heard of it? A hurricane is a huge and strong storm with speedy wind and lots of heavy rain. In addition to being famously known as hurricanes, scientists also refer to them as tropical cyclones.

But how massive could a hurricane be? Hurricanes are actually very massive that they could reach 600 miles across and have strong winds and these winds can actually reach speed of 75 to 200 MPH. This might sound scary for lots of people and especially kids who are still getting the information about hurricanes from this video.

How does a hurricane form? Hurricanes actually form over the ocean water of the tropics and they only form over really warm ocean water of 80 degrees or even sometimes higher. The tropics is the area of the equator, this is actually the imaginary line drawn in the center of the earth which is very warm and hot. Hurricanes form over the warm water of the tropics when the warm moist air over the water rises, it is replaced with cool air, the air then starts to rise and this cycle then causes huge storm which is referred to as a hurricane at the end.

There are lots of different parts of a hurricane, there is the eye of the hurricane which is in the center, this part is usually very calm with no clouds and with low air pressure. Actually the most dangerous part of the storm is on the edge of the eye and it is referred to as the eye wall, in this part there are always heavy clouds and the wind could reach up to 160 MPH. There are also the parts which are called rainbands which could cause massive floods when the hurricane reaches the land and they can drop lots of rain.

Does a hurricane cause damage? Yes, this could actually happen even though hurricanes are usually formed over the ocean but when the storm is strong it could actually move and what will be mainly causing all the damage is the flooding.

There is also what is known as a storm surge and this is when the water levels in the ocean rise along coastal areas because of the powerful storm which could cause flooding, and this is exactly the reason behind the damage that could be caused for the land. Hurricanes could also cause damage with speed winds which could blow down trees and also blow off the roofs of houses, these hurricanes could also lead to tornadoes (   • What is a Tornado? How is a Tornado F...  ).

The time frame for the appearance of a hurricanes is wide, it is believed to be mostly from June 1 to November 30 in the Atlantic Ocean but it mostly happen during the winter months, while in the Pacific Ocean it mostly happen from May 15 to November 30.

The speed of any hurricane is usually measured by the speed of the wind and this helps scientists to know how strong the hurricane is. There are actually three different categories for the speed of the wind, it could be from 74 to 95 MPH, from 96 to 110 MPH, it could be from 111 to 129 MPH, it could be from 130 to 156 MPH and it could also be from 157 or higher MPH.

The world witnessed lots of hurricanes before, there were easy ones and there are different strong ones which took their place, one of them is the Galveston Hurricane in the 1900's which killed between 6,000 to 12,000 people who mostly died from drowning. There were other hurricanes that came after and which also left behind damages and losses behind.

There are different natural disasters that the weather could cause in addition to hurricanes, there are tornadoes (   • Tornado Facts for Kids - What is a To...  ) and tsunamis (   • Tsunami Facts for Kids - What causes ...  ). When it comes to the different weather conditions, it would be also considered a good idea to teach the kids more about thunder and lightning (   • Weather Facts for Kids - What is Thun...  ) and even understand the cycle of water and what might bring down snow, rain or hail (   • Water Cycle Facts for Kids - Water Cy...  ).

Enjoy watching this video about hurricanes along with your kids and let us hear your feedback and how it turned out to be.
