Alligator Gorge in Mount Remarkable National Park, South four hours north of Adelaide SAforms part of the South Flinders Ranges. Deep within the Mount Remarkable National Park lies some truly hidden gems of which Alligator Gorge & the Narrows is one of the parks most spectacular ones.
Over 800 million years ago the Mount Remarkable National Park formed part of an ancient seabed. Through time the sands & clays of the seabed were deeply buried under pressure & turned into layers of hard rock. Fossilised ripple marks in the ancient sands are a reminder of the sea that once covered the land. The high cliffs & gorges of Mambray Creek & Alligator Gorge are composed of pink & white ABC Range quartzite formed approximately 600 million years ago.
