Volontario Giacomo Pian remembers December 4, 1941 when the XXX British Army Corps attacked and encircled 2 battalions of the Italian GGFF Regiment. Commonwealth forces consisted of the 11th Indian Brigade (around 3,000 men), 7th Armored Division (14,964 men), 22nd Guards Brigade around (3,000 men). The Italians forces consisted of 1,454 men only. Despite overwhelming odds, they defeated the Allies, inflicting massive casualties on them and held their ground despite severe hunger and thirst. Giacomo Pian single-handedly stopped a tank using an incendiary bomb and kept on fighting until Axis armored units arrived to relieve his unit.
