HOW TO OPEN YOUR SPIRITUAL EYES | C.S. LEWIS
C. s. Lewis once said “I believe in Christianity as I believe that the sun has risen: not only because I see it, but because by it I see everything else.” -
In our daily lives, we often focus on the physical world—what we can see, touch, and measure. But the Bible reminds us that there’s a deeper, spiritual reality that is just as real, if not more so.
In 2 Corinthians 4:18, Paul says, “So we fix
our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.” This verse calls us to lift our gaze beyond the material world and to focus on the eternal truths of God’s kingdom. But how can we do this? How do we open our spiritual eyes?
1. Start with Prayer and the Word
The first step to seeing with spiritual eyes is to align yourself with God through prayer and scripture. Ephesians 1:18-19 is a powerful prayer for spiritual vision: “I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you.”
Spend time daily in prayer, asking God to open the eyes of your heart. Read His Word diligently because it is a lamp to our feet and a light to our path (Psalm 119:105). Through the Bible, God reveals His truths and allows us to perceive the spiritual reality surrounding us.
2. Cultivate Faith Over Sight
The Bible teaches us in 2 Corinthians 5:7 that “we live by faith, not by sight.” Physical eyes often deceive us, but faith reveals the truth of God’s plans and purposes. Ask yourself: are you relying on your limited understanding, or are you trusting God’s higher perspective?
Developing faith requires a mindset shift. Stop looking for physical evidence of God’s work and start trusting in His promises. Faith opens the door to spiritual clarity, allowing you to see beyond the surface of life’s challenges.
3. Guard Your Heart
Proverbs 4:23 says, “Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.” A cluttered heart filled with sin, bitterness, or worldly distractions will cloud your spiritual vision. Repentance and surrender are crucial.
Ask God to purify your heart and remove anything that hinders your ability to see clearly. Forgiveness, humility, and gratitude are powerful tools to keep your heart in alignment with God.
4. Be Led by the Holy Spirit
The Holy Spirit plays a critical role in opening our spiritual eyes. John 16:13 tells us that the Spirit will guide us into all truth. Seek the Spirit’s guidance in your decisions, relationships, and daily life.
When you’re tuned in to the Holy Spirit, you’ll begin to discern God’s presence and purpose in every situation. You’ll see opportunities to serve, love, and grow spiritually that you might have otherwise missed.
5. Look Through the Lens of Eternity
Finally, remember that true spiritual vision comes from seeing life through the lens of eternity. Life on earth is fleeting, but what we do here has eternal significance.
Ask yourself: am I living for temporary things or for God’s eternal kingdom? When you focus on eternal values, your priorities shift, and your spiritual eyes become clearer.
Lastly, Opening your spiritual eyes requires intentionality—prayer, faith, a pure heart, and the guidance of the Holy Spirit. When you see life through God’s perspective, everything changes. You’ll experience greater peace, purpose, and clarity as you walk in His light.
