The IUCN has noted that the population of this species, found only in India, Nepal, and Sri Lanka, is decreasing. There are three subspecies of the Rusty-spotted Cat. One is found in India and Nepal, while the other two are found in Sri Lanka. The Rusty-spotted Cat has four vertical stripes on its forehead. It has dark brownish spots on its back, and its tail is half the length of its body and bushy. The body measures 14 to 17 inches in width and weighs about 1.5 kilograms. It has a breeding season of 70 days. This wild cat species can be found in both forests and agricultural areas. In Maharashtra, it is most commonly seen in sugarcane fields, likely due to the easy availability of food.
