Soham Walk: Town Centre【4K】

Описание к видео Soham Walk: Town Centre【4K】

Located in the county of Cambridgeshire, and around 15 miles northeast of Cambridge, is the town of Soham.

The town's name derives from Old English 'sǣge' meaning marsh and 'hām' meaning homestead or hemmed in land. It is situated around five miles southeast of Ely, which used to be an island until the fens surrounding it were drained in the 17th century. Prior to this, a network of causeways allowed some movement through this area.

At the heart of the town is St Andrew's Church. This dates from the 12th century, albeit with 14th and 15th century additions. It stands on the site of an older monastery dating back to the 7th century, founded by St Felix. The monastery was destroyed by the Danes in the 9th century - a period in which the 'Great Heathen Army' as the Saxon clerics dubbed them, overran East Anglia.

In 1879 the railway arrived in Soham. The station was closed in 1965 as part of the Beeching cuts, however in 2021 a new station was opened on the same site. It is situated on the Ipswich-Ely Line.

Famous people from Soham include footballer Nick Pope.
