You probably know what you Sun sign is, but what is the technical definition of a sun sign?

First we need the definition of a zodiac sign: 0:22
Then the definition of the ecliptic: 0:30
A sign is a 30º segment of the zodiac: 0:44
REMEMBER, signs and constellations aren't the same thing: 0:50
The zodiac is a measurement system: 1:02
Instead of saying a planet is at 77º of the ecliptic, we say it's at 17º Gemini: 1:17

The other planets are WAY more confusing and less regular: 2:45

SUN SIGN: the sign of the zodiac the Sun was in when you were born.

The Sun is just ONE planet in your astrological chart, and every other planet was ALSO in a sign when you were born. In fact, the Sun isn't even the most important planet in a chart... so why does everyone talk about it?

The short answer is that 1) Sun sign are really easy to know (you just need to know your birthday), and 2) Sun sign horoscopes were invented in the 1930s to provide entertainment in newspapers and magazines. Since the Sun sign is so easy to find, it was made the most sense to base horoscopes on that, rather than something more important like the Moon or Rising sign ─ which you need your birth date, year, time, and location to find.
