Super Mario Bros. 3 (SNES) Playthrough - NintendoComplete

A playthrough of Nintendo's 1993 platformer for the Super Nintendo, Super Mario Bros. 3 (as it appeared in Super Mario All-Stars).

In this video I play through every stage in the game and finish it without using warp zones.

Since I've already played the NES version and written at length about it (check out the link below if you're interested!), there's not a lot left to say about it here without merely repeating myself.

This remake of it is extremely well done, though. The new graphics look great, the new mix of the soundtrack is even better than the original's music, and best of all, and All-Stars addresses the single biggest flaw of the NES classic - you no longer have to finish the entire game in a single sitting thanks to the battery-backed save feature.

It's the most "16-bit" looking game of the package, so it might seem strange that Mario 3's facelift was somewhat less impactful than the upgrades made to the other games. I think that this is in large part a reflection of how advanced Mario 3 already was on the NES compared to its predecessors.

The older games were revitalized by the new coat of polish, but the NES version of Mario 3 had already started to blur the line between 8 and 16-bit platformers on its own. The upgrades to SMB3 were welcome, but they didn't really seem necessary - the original was still more than modern enough in 1993.

But that hardly matters, because at the end of the day, it's an excellent version of an excellent game, and the ability to save alone makes it worth checking out for fans of the original.
