On September 14, 1970, Helen Katherine Mason founded the Black Theatre Troupe. As an official in the City of Phoenix Parks and Recreation Department, she knew the value of creating needed community based programs. The #BlackTheatreTroupe operates to enhance the cultural and artistic awareness of the community by providing productions that illuminate the African-American experience and culture. Serving the community for 50+ years, it is the oldest African American Theatre in the southwestern United States! #CoolinYourZip #CIYZ
