Just like single words, idioms are born and die out. Over the past few decades, some have become mainstream, arriving from such sources as TV series, films, and internet culture.
In this webinar, we will recap what we understand by ‘idiom’, and consider idioms’ teachability and learnability. Using a lexical set (‘body’ idioms), we can see how a scaffolded lesson moves from prior lexical knowledge to collocation to exploration of idiomatic meaning.
We will also look at some more up-to-date idioms, with their meanings and origins, so you can broaden your own lexical repertoire and enjoy this fascinating language area ‘big time.’
