On 3 December, Mawlana Hazar Imam granted a didar to the Jamats of Portugal and Spain. During the ceremony, the Mukhi of Darkhana submitted the bayʿa on behalf of the Jamat, followed by a loyalty address delivered by the President of the Ismaili Council, Yasmin Bhudarally.

In his Farman, Mawlana Hazar Imam shared his concern for the health of the President of Portugal and conveyed that he has extended, on behalf of the Jamat and his family, heartfelt wishes for the President’s speedy recovery.

Hazar Imam also announced an important decision regarding the merit-based undergraduate scholarship programme administered by the Aga Khan Education Boards in selected countries. He informed the Jamat that all outstanding loans will be forgiven, and the programme will now become fully grant-based for both current and future awardees. He explained that this step reflects his aspiration to remove barriers to accessing quality higher education. The programme, established by Mawlana Shah Karim in the 1990s, has already enabled thousands of students to pursue undergraduate studies. Further details will be shared by the Education Boards in due course.

A special gift was then presented to Mawlana Hazar Imam on behalf of the Jamat — two 19th-century works documenting the Islamic architecture of Al-Andalus. This historic region of the Iberian Peninsula, home to diverse communities from the 8th to the 13th centuries, is remembered as a place where knowledge, creativity, and different traditions came together as sources of strength.

The architectural heritage of Al-Andalus includes iconic landmarks in the Spanish cities of Granada, Córdoba, and Seville, along with more recent discoveries in Lisbon, Mértola, Silves, and Sintra. Together, the gifted texts highlight a landscape shaped by tolerance, imagination, and cultural pluralism.

Later today, Hazar Imam will hold a special mulaqat for the youth and meet with members of multi-faith families.
