In Georgia, there are plenty of popular tourist spots where it's always noisy and crowded, places that don't quite beckon to you. But there's one exception - Uplistsikhe. Despite the throngs of people, I find immense pleasure in strolling along the ancient stones, running my fingers over their weathered surfaces, and contemplating the age of this remarkable city. 💕

Uplistsikhe stands as one of the oldest settlements in the Caucasus, a city ingeniously carved into the very rocks. Nestled in Shida Kartli, just 10 kilometers east of Gori, it graces the left bank of the Mtkvari River. This city boasts winding streets, a bustling center, distinct quarters, fortified gates, and even an underground tunnel leading to the majestic Mtkvari River. The dwellings are not the sole marvels to behold; there's a wealth of public edifices, including a theater, a regal throne hall, bustling market stalls, and even a pharmacy. The city's advanced infrastructure is evident in its well-maintained sewage system, wells, drainage networks, and reservoirs designed to store precious water. You can catch glimpses of ancient pagan and Christian temples scattered throughout, but it's the towering Uplistsikhe Church at the city's heart that commands attention. This active three-nave basilica, complete with a narthex dating back to the 10th century, serves as a testament to the city's enduring spiritual legacy. And don't forget the protective moat and fortress wall, crafted to guard the less precipitous side of the rock. As you step through the main entrance flanked by sturdy gates, the road unfurls before you, inviting you to embark on an unforgettable journey into the heart of this remarkable city. Indeed, Uplistsikhe is a living, breathing open-air museum.

The city itself emerged in the late second and early first millennium BC, weathering countless rises and falls throughout its existence. The Middle Ages bestowed upon Uplistsikhe its golden era, witnessing the coronation and matrimonial bliss of Queen Tamar. It wasn't until the 19th century, when a devastating earthquake struck, that the inhabitants reluctantly bid farewell to their beloved city. As a result, Uplistsikhe represents a veritable archaeological treasure trove, an intricate tapestry woven across the ages. During its prime, the city boasted over 700 caves and intricate subterranean structures, painting a vivid picture of a flourishing civilization.

Uplistsikhe has already unveiled countless treasures, yet there remains an equal abundance waiting to be unearthed... Within its timeless embrace, splendid legends and age-old lore intertwine with verifiable historical accounts, complemented by the breathtaking beauty of the surroundings. Yet, above all, it is the touch of those warm, slightly rough-hewn stones that transport you effortlessly to the bygone era. 💜

В Грузии существует множество популярных туристических мест, где всегда шумно и многолюдно, и туда не хочется и не тянет. Но есть исключение - Уплисцихе. Несмотря на толпы, мне нравится ходить по древним камням, прикасаться к ним и осознавать, как давно появился этот город💕

Уплисцихе - одно из древнейших поселений на Кавказе, город, высеченный в скале. Он расположен в Шида Картли, в 10 км к востоку от Гори, на левом берегу реки Мтквари. У города есть улицы, центр, кварталы, заставы, а также подземный туннель, ведущий к реке Мтквари. Помимо жилых зданий, здесь есть множество общественных помещений, таких как театр, тронный зал, торговые лавки и аптека. В городе прослеживается развитая канализационная сеть, колодцы, водосток и резервуары для хранения воды. Видны остатки языческих и христианских храмов, а в центре города возвышается действующая церковь Уплисцули - трехцерковная базилика с притвором X века. Также здесь имеется оборонительный ров и крепостная стена с той стороны, где скала недостаточно крута. От главного входа с воротами ведет дорога, по которой можно начать путь в город. В общем, здесь развита весьма хорошая инфраструктура. Уплисцихе - это настоящий музей под открытым небом.

Сам город возник в конце II - начале I тысячелетия до н.э. и пережил множество подъемов и падений. Средние века стали "золотым" временем для этого города. Здесь короновалась и венчалась царица Тамар. Окончательно жители Уплисцихе покинули его в XIX веке после сильного землетрясения. Таким образом, он является многослойным археологическим объектом, вобравшим в себя особенности многих веков. В период своего расцвета город включал в себя более 700 пещер и пещерных сооружений.
