This is a video showing a score of 20,160 on the first chimp challenge. I didn't get to try this for more than 30 minutes so it's far from perfect. In fact, I am not even sure if I found all of the items on the stage (I do know about the star bits near the beginning).

In the video at about 1:00, you can combo your jumps to the 3 enemies further and get 300, 300, 300 instead of my 100, 200, 300 to gain 300 points. However, if you do that you will almost certainly miss 2 coins from the first 2 enemies of that combo and possibly more, making it a much smaller improvement.
