This week's breed in focus is the Cocker Spaniel, originally bred as hunting dogs in the United Kingdom. Dog trainer and behaviourist, Lara Shannon, and Veterinarian Dr Melissa Meehan share all you need to know about the floppy-eared Cocker Spaniel or Cockers as they are often nicknamed. Helping to share the Cocker Spaniel story are the gorgeous Adam and Dougal.

Lara explains that English Cockers are intelligent and curious but as they are a hunting dog, owners must train them and work on their obedience. They are soft and sensitive souls though, so training must be positive and rewards-based. Cockers can be prone to separation anxiety, so they don't do well being left alone and can become a bit destructive as a result. And because they are a working dog breed they have a lot of stamina and energy so they need at least an hour a day of exercise and must be kept mentally active.

Dr Mel explains that the expected lifespan of a Cocker Spaniel is 12-14 years and they're considered a fairly healthy breed. However, she runs through a number of issues that can affect the Cockers big, soulful eyes and also their large, floppy ears. Specific signs to look out for are discussed, with the suggestion being to ask for veterinary advice if in doubt about possible signs or symptoms. We are also told how to diagnose and treat Cocker mouth, which is officially called lip-fold dermatitis.
