Today’s species spotlight is on the Giant goby, one of the UK’s rarest marine species! So, let me tell you all about the Giant goby. The Giant goby is a titan of the rocky shore and is Britain's largest goby species, growing to a length of 27cm, which is huge in comparison to other intertidal fish species. It can be identified by its large head, chunky body and a salt and pepper coloration. They are also able to change their coloration, depending on their mood and the surrounding area. The Giant goby inhabits high shore rock pools, often with a freshwater input, but can also be found in deep pools and off-shore down to a depth of 10m. They typically feed on crustaceans, small fish, and green algae such as sea lettuce. As I've already mentioned, this species is one of the rarest species found on UK shores, and its distribution is limited to the south west coasts of England. It is thought that the females can lay up to 12,000 eggs per season. The eggs are attached to the underside of large boulders, where they are fertilised and then guarded by the male. The giant goby is actually protected under the Wildlife & Countryside Act of 1981, making it a criminal offence to deliberately harm individuals or damage their habitats!
