Most of the headings refer to recurring themes from the soundtrack but a few refer to specific scenes, depending on what felt most suitable. In the latter cases I remained conscious of the thematic material. I condensed the Prologue to the opening section (the Lothlórien and Ring themes) plus the themes "The Pity of Gollum" and "A Nameless Fear." The ascending scalar motif in "The Bridge of Khazad-dûm" is the Moria theme. The "Amon Hen" section contains part of "A Noble End" and the funereal, truncated version of the Fellowship theme that plays as Boromir dies, which conveys the breaking of the Fellowship and works well as a transition to the Eowyn/Rohan themes.

For the ending I decided to use the hymn-like, modal setting of the Shire theme that plays as Frodo departs. It brings everything full circle but also has a touch of sadness not present in the first statement of the theme.
