I built this desk for the IGBuildersChallenge Season 6 on Instagram, which is a woodworking challenge that anyone can join. Each challenge, you take the plans that a judge creates and put your spin on it. This season was a desk and I had so much fun building this.

I needed a long desk for my office, but it's a smaller room so I didn't have the space for something huge. I decided to leave the desk the size it was in the plans and made a slide out for the times when I needed the extra desk space.

With every challenge, I try and push myself to do something I've never done before. This challenge was no different - I wanted to step outside my comfort zone and use something other than pine. I chose walnut for my tops and drawer faces and poplar for my frame. Since I was using nicer wood for the tops, I wanted to learn a different joining method so I chose biscuit joining and I loved it!! I also wanted to incorporate metal into this build, and since I have absolutely no experience with welding, I decided to use an old microscope slide drawer that I found at an antique mall. It was definitely a struggle cleaning off all of the rust (there was a ton), but once I cleaned it up and painted it, it was worth it. It really pulled my desk together and I love the way everything turned out.
