Mussorgsky's solo piano suite 'Pictures at an Exhibition' has been transcribed for many different ensembles over the years, its numerous orchestrations having been headed by Maurice Ravel's arrangement. Other orchestrators of the work have included Leopold Stokowski, Sir Henry Wood, Leo Funtek, Lucien Cailliet, Sergei Gorchakov, Vladimir Askenazy, Lawrence Leonard and many others.

The suite was composed in 1874 and is Mussorgsky's musical depiction of an exhibition in Saint Petersburg of paintings and sketches by Viktor Hartmann, whose sudden death had occurred the previous year. Each movement is based on an individual picture, with the recurring 'Promenade' suggesting a visitor to the gallery moving from one picture to another.

The work was also orchestrated by the Czech conductor / composer Václav Smetáček (1906-1986). His rarely played version was performed in the Smetana Hall, Prague, in 2004 by the Prague Symphony Orchestra conducted by Gennady Rozhdestvensky. Its radio broadcast is heard here, so the wide range of audio levels is the same as were heard over the air.
