Audio Visual for the Mahayag Dam Project - PBBM Build, Better, More.

PBBM Build, Better, More. Inaugurating the Mahayag Dam Project for sustainable progress and community prosperity.

Bringing renewed hope to our farming communities—President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. inaugurates the fully rehabilitated Mahayag Dam in Barangay Lower Salug Daku, Mahayag, Zamboanga del Sur, on February 12, 2026. Originally built in 1967, the Mahayag Dam has been a vital part of the Salug River Irrigation System, serving over 8,102 hectares of farmland. After severe flooding in 2022-2023 damaged the structure, the government, led by the National Irrigation Administration with Php450 million in funding, has restored this critical infrastructure to ensure continued irrigation services for over 3,000 farmers across four towns.

This project exemplifies the government’s unwavering commitment to disaster recovery, agricultural progress, and sustainable infrastructure development for the Philippines. Our President also encourages farmers to adopt innovative machinery and technologies to ease their workload, boost productivity, and secure a prosperous future for themselves and their families. May you become role model of inspiration for the younger generation who aspire to elevate our agriculture and strengthen our economy, thereby supporting and uplifting our nation. Rest assured, the government remains dedicated to supporting all farmers in achieving stable livelihoods and a brighter tomorrow. Together, we are forging a resilient, food-secure Philippines.

Signaling renewed hope for farming communities through the government’s strong commitment to disaster recovery, agricultural development and long-term infrastructure resilience, President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. inaugurates the newly rehabilitated Mahayag Dam in Barangay Lower Salug Daku, Municipality of Mahayag, Zamboanga del Sur on February 12, 2026.

Originally built in 1967, during the admistration of President Ferdinand Edralin Marcos Sr. the Mahayag Dam has long been a vital part of the Salug River Irrigation System (Salug RIS) — the largest national irrigation system (NIS) in the entire Zamboanga Peninsula — providing irrigation to over 8,102.58 hectares of farmland, with 5,044.28 hectares served by the Mahayag Dam.

However, because of severe flooding in late 2022 and early 2023, the structure was heavily damaged, leading to a partial collapse that endangered irrigation services and nearby communities.

Spearheaded by the National IrrigationAdministration (NIA), in close coordination with the Office of Civil Defense (OCD) and the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC), funding for its full reconstruction and major rehabilitation was secured, with an allocation of Php450 million from the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Fund (NDRRMF).

Now fully rehabilitated, the Mahayag Dam will serve 3,174 farmers from the towns of Mahayag, Molave, Ramon Magsaysay and Sominot, providing a reliable and efficient water supply that enhances food production, raises farm incomes and supports national food security.

The event also highlights other irrigation initiatives, including 20 Solar-Powered Pump Irrigation Projects (SPIP) as part of NIA’s Establishment of Groundwater Pump Irrigation Project. The SPIP aims to boost agricultural productivity in remote or drought-prone areas that lack access to reliable electricity. Together, we build a resilient, food-secure future for our farmers.
