Nasal Valve Collapse - Face the Facts with Dr. Lexie Wang | West End Plastic Surgery

Описание к видео Nasal Valve Collapse - Face the Facts with Dr. Lexie Wang | West End Plastic Surgery

On this episode of Face the Facts, Dr. Wang discusses the difference between the external and internal nasal valves, and what happens when one—or both—are collapsed. If you’re struggling to breathe through your nose or wondering if your nasal valves are playing a role, tune in to get the facts straight from an expert!

The two nasal valves, external and internal, are critical anatomical structures in the nose that regulate airflow:

1. External Nasal Valve:
It is located at the nostril entrance, formed by the lower lateral cartilage, the nostril rim, and the soft tissues around the nose. It controls airflow into the nasal cavity, stabilizing the nostril opening during breathing. If it collapses, it causes the nostrils to narrow or collapse inward when inhaling, leading to difficulty breathing through the nose. This often worsens during physical activity or deep breaths.

2. Internal Nasal Valve:
It is located deeper inside the nose, formed by the septum, the upper lateral cartilage, and the inferior turbinate. Its function is to regulate airflow between the narrowest point of the nasal passage and the back of the nasal cavity. If it collapses, it results in significant airflow obstruction, making it feel like the nose is blocked. This can cause chronic nasal congestion, difficulty breathing, and a reliance on mouth breathing.

What Happens When One or Both Valves Collapse?
--Breathing Difficulty: Reduced airflow can cause chronic nasal congestion and discomfort, making it hard to breathe through the nose.
--Increased Mouth Breathing: With limited nasal airflow, individuals may find themselves relying on mouth breathing, which can lead to dry mouth and throat irritation.
--Reduced Quality of Life: Nasal valve collapse can impact sleep, exercise tolerance, and overall well-being due to the constant struggle to breathe effectively.
