A Guatemalan woman made it through her time in ICE custody on December 3, 2025, but Francisco Gaspar Cristóbal Andrés, her husband of 25 years, passed away in U. S. immigration detention a week after turning 48.

✅ In Homewood, Florida, the pair had established a life where they raised five girls, ran a nursery, and paid U. S. taxes, but they never obtained citizenship.

✅ They were first taken into custody in Florida after being arrested by Florida police, then they were handed over to ICE. They were then moved to Texas, where Andrés was kept at the Camp East Montana detention center in El Paso.

✅ ICE reported that he died from liver and kidney failure, while his wife insists he was healthy before his detention.

✅ People raised serious concerns about the facility's conditions, pointing to unsanitary living quarters and protracted detention times as evidence of a larger pattern of abuse under ICE custody.

The charges of mistreatment, however, have been refuted by DHS authorities, who claim that they are exaggerated and that detainees are treated fairly and given access to legal and family visits.
