Welcome to the Complex Care Center at Cape Coral Hospital. “It's really a place to take care of people that need rapid follow-up from the emergency department or after a hospitalization when they can't get into their primary care doctors quickly and we can get them in here for a recheck in usually just a few days,” said Dr. Richard Macchiaroli, LPG Chief Physician Executive of Hospital-Based care.

It’s staffed by hospitalists, pharmacists, and licensed clinical social workers. They can provide a wide variety of services. “We can do the rechecks, just the physical exams. We can do labs and x-rays for those patients when they come in if they need to have a lab rechecked. We can do infusions, like iron infusions, for example. Sometimes blood transfusions if they need to be done and they're not emergent,” said Dr. Macchiaroli.

Think of it as a bridging device between the hospital and outpatient world. “It's a great community service. It helps reduce our readmissions. It helps avoid unnecessary admissions,” said Dr. Macchiaroli.

There’s been a complex care center at Lee Memorial Hospital for 8 years, but patients can be reluctant to travel there. “We really want to get the care in their backyard that they need, so that they don't have to cross over to Fort Myers or somewhere else. We want that to be right here in the Cape.” said Dr. Macchiaroli.
