Tom Lewith of New-works and Andy Tugby of Human Nature together talk on the mass timber strategy for The Phoenix development in Lewes, Sussex.

Tom starts by sharing how his architectural practice has engaged with Modern Methods of Construction (MMC) in the past - the opportunities and flexibility it can offer. He shares how they have developed that thinking by exploring the tension between standardisation and customisation, and how that was applicable to early work on The Phoenix.

Andy then talks about the development of the mass timber strategy and design for the site and what that has facilitated for The Phoenix locally in terms of timber supply and labour. Andy also discusses the strategy for implementation with on-site MMC opportunities.

The webinar is hosted by Laura Broderick of the Building Centre, with time for Q&A with our audience after the presentations.

About our speakers:

Tom is a Chartered Architect and co-founder of New-works. Between 2010 and 2024 he co-founded and ran TDO. In 2020 he was named in The Architects’ Journal 40 under 40. The studio’s innovative built work with MMC includes FAB house for Urban Splash and the Low Line arches. Tom is passionate about the potential applications of MMC and the lessons it offers the profession about the benefits of moving towards specialism and collaboration, a founding principle of New-works.

Andy Tugby is Head of Sustainable Construction at Human Nature. Andy started out as a consultant in the world of sustainable architecture in the early 2000’s working with a range of consultancies and businesses. He is an experienced carpenter, and an expert in technical systems design and installation. At Human Nature, Andy is responsible for the investigation, adoption and specification of sustainable materials and circular, low carbon construction methodologies and practices.
