This the introductory first video of a trilogy designed to explore the controversy over the Sydney Sweeney jeans advert for American Eagle from a philosophical point of view.

The next two videos will look in detail at the notion of seduction using the work of the French philosopher, Jean Baudrillard, and the Danish Theologian/Philosopher, Soren Kierkegaard.

I argue that at the simplest level, the vitriolic reaction by some to the Sydney Sweeney advert is due to our society’s increasingly ideological inability to deal with the sort of ambiguous communication inherent in portrayals of seduction whether they be in art and literature, or, adverts for jeans.
