Jesse Baker reflects on his experience as he lead a grassroots organization in response to the cholera epidemic that has taken the lives of over 8,700 Haitians in the wake of Haiti’s devastating 2010 Earthquake.

Jesse Baker earned his PhD in Environmental Policy from UC Irvine’s School of Social Ecology where his educational focus was international development. Upon completing his PhD, he founded the non-profit organization Ecofficiency.Org as a means to explore, critique, and push the boundaries of sustainability and sustainable development.

Through Ecofficiency.Org, Dr. Baker initiated Project 509 as a grassroots response to the cholera epidemic that has taken the lives of over 8,700 Haitians in the wake of Haiti’s devastating 2010 Earthquake. Project 509 works directly with Haitians to empower rural mountain communities (too often left out of the development efforts of large-scale international aid organizations) with appropriate tools to more effectively address water access and sanitation needs.
