I got my first tattoo when I was 19. Home from college and crashing at my parents house, I remember going out for the night and when my mom asked where I was headed I casually replied, "To get a tattoo." I don't think she believed me.... well, at least she didn't want to. Nothing was mentioned about it for days. Finally I think she just couldn't take it any more and asked to see it.

A design of my own creation, located on my upper back (where, thank god, I don't have to look at it too often), I lifted my shirt and showed her. My mother didn't talk to me for days.

Over the years I've gotten several more. I've often heard that tattoos are addictive, and watching this video, I really want to run over to Underground Art and get another one.

I once read that people who get tattoos are the "sentimental type." I'm not sure that I totally agree with that statement; I don't often outwardly identify as "sentimental," but I think it's an interesting point. For me, tattoos can represent any number of things, but what most often comes to mind when I look at the ones I've collected over the years is that time in my life - who I was then - and it's often a comparison to who I am now.

At 31 there's no way in hell I would go out and get the tattoo I got when I was 19, or even the one I got when I was 20, or 25; I'm just not that person anymore. But I can honestly say that I don't regret a single one of them...

Oh, and my mom and I talk all the time ;)
