Описание к видео The Man Who Survived the Coldest Winter by Reading

In 1912, Antarctic explorer Apsley Cherry-Garrard embarked on what would become known as "The Worst Journey in the World." As part of Robert Falcon Scott's ill-fated expedition, he faced the coldest recorded winter on Earth—with temperatures plummeting to a bone-shattering –77°F (–60°C).
Cherry-Garrard and two companions set out on a harrowing mission across the frozen Antarctic wasteland to retrieve emperor penguin eggs for scientific research. Their tent was blown away by savage winds. Their clothes froze solid to their bodies. The extreme cold caused their teeth to shatter. With death stalking them at every turn, they huddled in a tiny snow cave as blizzards screamed outside.
In those desperate moments, Cherry-Garrard pulled out a book he had carried the entire way—Charles Dickens' The Pickwick Papers. By the dim, flickering light of a candle, he read. The story, he later said, kept him sane when all hope seemed lost. It was the smallest comfort in the harshest place on Earth, but it was enough.
He returned frostbitten, half-conscious, but alive. The penguin eggs he recovered became valuable biological artifacts. His incredible survival proved that sometimes a simple story can be the difference between life and death.
