King of the Overburden Blues is a song that began in 2004. I wrote the music and the initial verses on the drive home from my first year of filming on the dig in eastern Montana with JRDI.
The inspiration for the King was a father, with little interest in dinosaurs!
He escorted his daughter, who was passionate about dinosaurs, to the dig.
Dad spent a lot of time with a shovel digging the overburden only to walk away when he got to the "Matrix" which contains the fossils so that those with skills and a desire to learn paleontological field practices could work the bones.
He definately was the King of the Overburden and was working very hard to support his daughter's interest and education.
The "get behind" line was inspired by Jack Horner!
Based on the stories I had heard from diggers who had attended digs conducted by Nate and by Jack. Nate always instructed the diggers on how to work on bones they discovered. Their level of expertise was a determening factor in what type of fissils they could work on safely. While everyone working wieh Jack repoted that if they found a bone, Jack would pull them off of the specimen and work on it himself. (Get Behind!)
The song was such a hit with the diggers that they began to write their own verses! This video is an almost complete compilation of all the verses written over the last 25 years by diggers who attended a Judith River Dinosaur Institute dig in Montana!
Yeah, it is way long because there are so many verses.
At last, the long awaited music video for the King of the Ovreburden Blues is done...for now.
