Have you ever seen a locomotive lashup that looked a little bit more colorful than usual, with different units of different company schemes powering a train for a single railroad? Well, if you’re a foamer or casual train enthusiast alike, you almost certainly have. Railroads across North America often share their power to each other to run trains across the continent. However, this phenomenon does raise the question of why a railroad would either share its power to someone else or use another company’s power when they have their own units. The answer to these inquiries can be summarized in two words: foreign power, a practice much more common than in times past and having an important role in ensuring the efficiency of railroad operations.
