This is the third episode of “What Makes This Map Great?”, as we continue our journey through the legendary first episode of Quake! Join me as we dive into the secrets of E1M3, The Necropolis.

Designed by Tim Willits, this level continues to push the capabilities of the idtech 2 engine. The level pushes scale and verticality in a new way, layering and interconnected level design, and really goes hard on portraying the dark moody atmosphere of Quake. We also are introduced to the Zombie, a fun monster encounter that teaches you these undead are best dealt with the grenade launcher.

We’ll explore its brilliant design, terrifying new enemy type, enemy encounter designs, and why this map is a memorable classic in FPS level design.
