How Do I Stop Pesky Winter Grass?! | Treatment & Prevention of Poa annua (Winter Grass) in Your Lawn

Описание к видео How Do I Stop Pesky Winter Grass?! | Treatment & Prevention of Poa annua (Winter Grass) in Your Lawn

Once again, it’s the time of year when many of us start to see Winter Grass infiltrate our lawns and it can be one of the more frustrating weeds to remove year after year.

In this video, we look at what winter grass is and how you can stop it from spreading throughout your lawn for good.

Winter Grass, botanically known as Poa annua is a low-growing weed that has soft, drooping green leaves and grows in tufts.

Winter grass can start to appear when the average soil temperature drops to 16 – 17 degrees. For most areas, this is around mid to late Autumn or when you start to notice the cooler temperatures. When the soil temperatures drop below this, the winter grass seeds that are in the soil will start to germinate and grow.

As Winter grass continues to grow and reach maturity, it begins to produce a green to white seedhead. These seeds are then dropped onto the lawn, or spread by wind, birds, or underfoot… and will grow a new winter grass weed.

Treatment
If Winter Grass has already infiltrated your lawn, it is best to use a selective post-emergent herbicide. Amgrow Winter Grass Killer is a selective herbicide safe to use on most varieties including Blue Couch, Common Couch, Bent, Buffalo and Brown top lawns.

While not commonly safe to use on Kikuyu or Fescue lawns there are now other winter grass treatment products on the market that can be used for these lawn types also.

Prevention
You can actually start to prevent Winter grass before it begins to appear.
Pre-emergent herbicides like Oxafert and Oxafert Plus target seasonal weed seeds like Winter grass that are already in the soil, stopping them during seed germination, before they appear above the surface.

Pre-emergents are best applied in mid to late Autumn, or when the temperatures start to drop in your location, this will help to target winter grass when it commonly starts to germinate. But it’s never too late to get it down.

It is important to note, that pre-emergent products will only stop winter grass during germination and won’t treat winter grass that has already appeared above the surface of the lawn. That is when a post-emergent winter grass killer is required.

If you have quite a bad winter grass infestation, we recommend tackling the winter grass with both pre and post-emergent products, as it can take a few years to get on top of the large seed bank that has likely developed within the soil.

The adage ‘one year’s seed makes seven years of weeding’ is very true when it comes to winter grass, but Oxafert can help dramatically speed up the process of eradication from your lawn.

You can find Oxafert and Winter Grass Killer herbicides available on the online Lawn Store or from local Lawn Solutions Australia Members and stockists.
