"Farthest at Gettysburg" North Carolina and Pickett's Charge.

In the late afternoon on July 3, 1863 the Army of Northern Virginia made one more attempt to break the Union position on Cemetery Ridge with an all out attack on thier center. The attack is popularly known as Pickett's Charge, George Pickett had little to do with the planning and execution of the attack, so why is it named for him? Pickett was the highest ranking Virginian involved and by 1863 the "cause" had been co opted by Virginia, success and failure in the eastern theater of war was Virginia's to claim or blame.

Troops from Virginia were not as successful (if any part of this attack can been seen as a success) as men fro North Carolina, who, after Gettysburg used the battle cry "Farthest at Gettysburg" to commemorate their courage and bravery.
