Many people think Colorado is a perfect rectangle — but in reality, it isn’t!

Here’s why:

1. Curved Earth:
The borders of Colorado were drawn using lines of latitude and longitude, but the Earth is round. When those straight lines are projected onto a curved surface, they don’t form perfect right angles on the ground.


2. Surveying Errors:
In the 1800s, when Colorado’s borders were first surveyed, the tools were far less precise. Small measurement mistakes and magnetic variations caused the borders to shift slightly from the intended coordinates.


3. Uneven Borders:

The northern border (with Wyoming) is slightly off — it leans a bit.

The southern border (with New Mexico) is not perfectly straight due to surveying discrepancies.

The eastern and western borders (Kansas/Utah sides) don’t meet the north and south lines exactly at 90° angles.


So while it looks like a neat rectangle on a map, Colorado is actually an irregular quadrilateral — four sides, but none perfectly straight or perfectly square!
