STORYLINE
Funeral processions filed through the streets of Pakistan's biggest city on Sunday as people mourned some of those killed in clashes between pro-government and opposition groups, the worst political violence to grip Pakistan in years.
Street battles raged in Karachi on Sunday for a second day, pushing the death toll to 41 and heightening inter-ethnic tensions.
Gunmen traded shots between neighbourhoods dominated by rival ethnic groups, and police found the bullet-ridden body of a pro-government activist.
Firefighters were called after a funeral procession left a row of shops in flames.
Competing rallies timed for a visit to Karachi on Saturday by the country's top judge had sparked gunfights and clashes between rival political activists that left corpses in the streets and raised new fears for the nation's stability.
A crisis has been brewing since President General Pervez Musharraf suspended Chief Justice Iftikhar Mohammed Chaudhry on March 9 over allegations he abused his office.
Critics accuse Musharraf, who is also the army chief, of trying to sideline the independent-minded judge in case of legal challenges to efforts to prolong his nearly eight-year rule.
Security forces struggled to restore order on Sunday, despite the deployment of armoured personnel carriers and pickup trucks topped with machine guns to patrol the mostly deserted streets.
Tensions appeared highest between Pashtuns and Urdu-speaking supporters of the pro-government Mutahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) party.
Opposition parties have accused the MQM of initiating much of Saturday's violence, in which Pashtun supporters of Chaudhry were among the dead.
Opposition parties blamed Musharraf and the MQM for the violence.
"It was 100 percent straight terrorism because the whole strait of province of Sindh has been given to MQM," Manawer Hassan of the General Secretary of Jumat i Islami told AP Television.
"They are the custodians of this province so as a matter of fact they are totally responsible as a government and totally responsible as a party because they have killed the citizens of Karachi and they have negated the right of citizens of Karachi to listen to Chief Justice, to welcome him and to express their own willingness about him," Hassan added.
Based on reports from police and officials at four hospitals, the death toll rose to 41 with about 150 wounded.
The Karachi police chief said several people have been arrested in connection with Saturday's violence but gave no details.
He declared that authorities were "now in control of the city."
