The "Phantom Galaxy" image from the James Webb Space Telescope looks like a wormhole.

A wormhole appeared to be whirling right before our eyes in a new picture based on recent deep-space data.

In a brand-new image created by Judy Schmidt using information from the James Webb Space Telescope's mid-infrared sensor (MIRI), the fittingly named "Phantom Galaxy" glows hauntingly over a million miles from our planet.

The galaxy, which is really known as NGC 628 or Messier 74, is highlighted by the photograph because it has dust lanes. The Phantom Galaxy, which some astronomers refer to as the "perfect spiral" because of how symmetrical it is, is scientifically intriguing due to the intermediate-mass black hole that is thought to be present at its centre.

The galaxy has already been professionally observed several times, notably by space observatories like the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer and the Hubble Space Telescope. The strength of the unusual 18-segment hexagonal mirror and the deep-space position of the Webb spacecraft, together with the mid-infrared spectrum that emphasises cosmic dust, make Webb's pictures more spectacular than others.

A few hours or days following JWST observations, a selection of raw Webb images is made accessible to the public, and amateur imagers and scientists are welcome to utilise the data as long as they properly attribute the source when publishing.

An astronomer at the Cosmic Dawn Center of the Niels Bohr Institute at the University of Denmark named Gabriel Brammer also posted the information on Twitter (with different filters).
