Birth Control: What Is It?

Do you know what birth control, also known as contraception, is? Birth control is a collection of methods that are used to prevent pregnancy. These methods include condoms, the Pill, the Patch, the Ring, the Shot, IUDs and implants. Some methods are barriers that prevent sperm from entering the vagina. Others use chemicals that act like hormones to prevent an egg from being released from the ovaries. Some prevent the spread of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), including HIV, and others don’t. When these methods are used consistently and correctly they are very effective at preventing pregnancy. Before people decide to have sex they should be familiar with different birth control methods. Keep in mind that the only thing that is 100-percent effective at preventing pregnancy and STDs is not engaging in sexual behaviors.
